Luxury vinyl plank flooring in a Redmond, WA home

Is luxury vinyl plank the same as an LVT floor?

No, and yes. The style is different, with one cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards and the other cut into groutable squares to echo stone or tile. However, they are both design options of luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) and have the same visual appeal, realism, and functional properties.

Style and affordability

LVF provides realistic photographs of wood, stone, and tile taken with 3D photography with images inspired by nature. The images are clear and vibrant, and the floors have micro beveling and embossing to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances.

One question we hear most often is if the designs are current. Yes, they follow all the trends, whether you want the trendy gray wood look floors, marble, travertine or slate stone looks, or colorful geometric and encaustic-style tile patterns. However, note that this is only a fraction of what you'll see. It's so realistic sometimes even flooring experts have trouble telling them apart from the real thing, but you will undoubtedly know at check-out time because you won't pay nearly the same price.

Extreme durability

Luxury vinyl is a newer, more advanced version of the original vinyl flooring; it is five times thicker with at least four layers and a top clear, strong melamine coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuff. True LVF should measure at least 8-mm in thickness; wear layers measure separately, and that should be at least 20-mils.
It is also completely waterproof, not to be confused with water-resistant from bottom to top, meaning it can be submerged or spilled on. That is because a waterproof product is made of entirely waterproof materials.

All LVF is low maintenance with a regular (daily, if possible) sweeping and periodic mopping. Installation can be a floating floor where the pieces click together, mat, and hover over the subfloor.
