Why choose engineered?
The only difference with engineering is the construction. Rather than one slab throughout the thickness, this has a slab on top which gives it the beautiful undertones and interesting knots and swirls we all expect. Underneath are at least three layers of authentic wood, combined with a little resin, and placed in a crosswise position. That construction gives it more stability and an increased ability to handle water.
While all hardwood, including solid, does have easy maintenance, homeowners need to be mindful that solid wood can be damaged by water. There are some higher-than-normal moisture areas, such as below-grade levels, where solid hardwood isn't recommended for installation.
Engineered has a little more versatility in installation possibilities; it can be installed in the basement, as well as over a concrete subfloor. Since it is stable, these wood floors will not shrink and expand to adjust to weather conditions, so no acclimation is necessary.
