Carpet Care & Maintenance Tips

Once you’ve installed a new carpet from Nielsen Bros Flooring, you’ll likely want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. Consult our helpful carpet maintenance guide for care tips.

Regular Care

Dirt is a carpet’s worst enemy, so vacuum often using a cleaner recommended by us or your manufacturer. Every step taken on a dirty carpet grinds and pushes dirt deeper into fibers, breaking them down over time. Regular vacuum cleaning is the best way to ensure that a carpet's beauty lasts.

The following features are ideal for vacuum cleaners:

  • Adjustable height
  • Efficient airflow, as opposed to vacuums with very concentrated or sealed suction
  • Large wheels to allow the appliance to glide across carpet easily

Every year or so, consider a professional cleaning, depending on the level of traffic your carpet endures regularly, its color, and other factors. Ask us for a recommendation depending on the product you choose.

Another scenario in which a professional cleaner is necessary is in the case of flooding - your carpet will need to be dried front and back, a task we don't recommend tackling on your own. Be sure to consult your warranty and your manufacturer in cases of flooding.

Promptly Clean Spills the Right Way

The first rule of carpet spills? Never scrub!

As soon as a spill happens, lift away any solid material away using a spoon, knife, or other similar tool. Add water and blot the area gently with a clean cloth in the direction of the pile. Again, don’t scrub! Use a recommended cleaning solution if water isn’t enough. Salt can also be used to absorb colored liquids like juice or wine.

Vacuum the area on the setting with maximum suction to remove any remaining stain or moisture, repeating the above steps until the stain is gone and the area is completely dry. You can leave a dry towel on top of the wet area overnight to fully absorb moisture.

Specific Spill Types

Beer, wine, coffee and tea

Blot using a solution of water and white vinegar, then work a small amount of a detergent solution into the spot. Continue applying detergent and blotting until spot is completely removed. Use a spray bottle to rinse the area with tap water, then vacuum to remove excess moisture. Allow the spot to dry overnight using a dry towel.

Blood, ketchup, cheese, chocolate, cola, cough syrup, mixed drinks, soft drinks, soy sauce, starch, toothpaste and/or white glue

All solutions for removing blood must be cool in temperature.
Blot the spot with a solution of water and ammonia, using a spray bottle to saturate the spot. Next, work a small amount of a detergent solution into the spot, continuing to apply detergent and blotting until the spot is removed. Using a spray bottle, rinse with tap water and vacuum on maximum suction to remove excess moisture. Lay a dry towel on top of the spot overnight to completely dry the area.

Mud and dirt

Allow any mud to dry completely. Then shatter the dried mud and vacuum.
For dirt, apply a small amount of a detergent solution to the spot and blot with a dry towel to work the detergent into the affected area. Continue applying detergent and blotting until the spot is removed. Using a spray bottle, rinse with tap water, and then vacuum on maximum suction to remove excess moisture.

Snags, Burns & Dents

You can trim away snags and burns with scissors, but never pull on a snag, as this will simply make the problem worse. For furniture dents, use a coin to gently brush the fibers and remove the marks. Do not rub your carpet, as this will damage the fibers.
