Since 1946, Nielsen Brothers Flooring has been the company that Greater Seattle families trust when it comes to quality and character. What started as brothers Tom and Lloyd Nielsen selling carpet and tile from their small Ballard storefront has since grown into a legacy built on honest guidance, expert installation and relationships that spans generations. Today, third-generation owner Mike Nielsen continues that tradition. We still measure every project ourselves, back every installation with a lifetime warranty and treat your home the way we’d treat our own.

We aren’t a chain of rotating managers or a big-box store with commissioned salespeople. Through and through, we’re a family flooring business with an owner that knows your name, personally handles your quotes and stands behind our work long after the installation crew leaves. HOW WE GOT HERE

Our Story

In 1946, Tom and Lloyd Neilsen started out with a small Ballard storefront. The mission was simple: provide quality carpet and tile to Seattle-area homeowners for fair prices. Back then, product selection was straightforward since it was only carpet and tile. However, what they sold isn’t what made them stand out. Nielsen Brothers sold flooring with integrity, expertise and genuine care for every customer who walked through the door.

Nielsen Brothers Flooring changed with the time. Eventually, the Ballard operation expanded its offerings to virtually every type of flooring, including hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, bamboo, natural stone and innovative new materials as they became available. The company built its reputation on staying at the forefront of flooring fashion, bringing the latest products and technologies to Seattle customers while maintaining the personalized service that made them successful.

Mike’s father, Jim Nielsen along with his brother Tom and cousin Pat Nielsen carried the business into its second generation. They expanded operations, building out locations and growing the family’s reach across the Greater Seattle area. Through industry changes, economic shifts and evolving customers, they maintained the foundation of top-quality products, outstanding customer service and fair prices established by Tom and Lloyd.

Mike Nielsen

Owner & Local Flooring Expert

After graduating in 2007, Mike knew exactly where belonged. He joined Nielsen Brothers full-time, working through every aspect of the operation, from the warehouse to driving trucks to sales and project management. By learning the construction side of flooring, he didn’t just learn how to sell products, but how they work in the Pacific Northwest.

Today, as sole owner and third-generation leader, Mike has brought Nielsen Brothers into the modern era while staying true to its roots. He personally handles every measurement and consultation, working with installers he’s known for over 20 years. Some even worked alongside his father. He serves customers who remember working with his dad or even his grandfather, often bringing their own children or grandchildren to continue the relationship.

There aren’t surprise fees for “upgraded” padding as premium cushion is included with every carpet installation as it’s essential, not optional. You don’t have to worry about something needing attention years from now either as our installations are backed by a lifetime warranty.

My wife and I enjoyed the experience of selecting a new carpet at Nielsen Bros Flooring.  We were respected and treated well by the store employees and owner.  Recommendations were made by the store and after careful consideration a selection was made. They always delivered a great product at a fair price and did outstanding work. The last installation was for three bedrooms and the master bedroom. They laid out the master bedroom with ONE piece of carpet that covered the bedroom and the walk-in clothes closet too to eliminate seems. Thoughtful planning and a great benefit to us.

Bought our carpet from here last fall. Great selection in many styles and qualities of carpet. We bought a high end carpet and couldn't find a cheaper price when we shopped around.
